Obituary for Charles Thomas "Chuck" Taylor

Chuck Taylor of Martinsburg passed away peacefully at home, under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

Chuck was a lifelong Martinsburg resident and 1976 graduate of Martinsburg High School. His career highlights include Police Officer for the Ranson Police Department, Shepherdstown Police Department and Martinsburg Police Department. He also served the City of Martinsburg as a City Councilman.

Most recently he was the owner of Taylor Sports and Recreation in Martinsburg, providing many of the park and playground amenities found throughout the Eastern Panhandle.

Chuck was a proud Martinsburg High School supporter and spent many hours behind the microphone announcing Martinsburg High School sporting events including football and basketball and occasionally soccer and baseball. He could often also be found on the sidelines cheering on his beloved Bulldogs.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lori Hurd Taylor and the prides of his life, daughter, Lauren Haines and her husband, Clayton, along with their soon to arrive son, Benjamin, and daughter, Jenna Taylor, all of Martinsburg; a brother, John Taylor and his wife, Carolyn and their family, brother-and-sister in laws, Mike, and Sandy Hurd of Marriottsville, MD and Tim and Jenny Hurd of Chicago, plus their families.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Harvey and Dorothy Jean Taylor, and brother-in-law Jeff Hurd of Ohio.

The Brown Funeral Home will be open for family to receive friends only from the hours of 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 4, 2021. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Jim Riley officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Martinsburg High School Fan Appreciation Club, Hospice of the Panhandle, or American Cancer Society.
