Obituary for Edward Lee "Eddie Boy" Johnson

Edward Lee Johnson, 79 of Martinsburg passed away Friday, January 22, 2021 in the Berkeley Medical Center.

He was born January 19, 1942 in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Reverend Jeremiah J.M. Johnson, II and Carrie Stevenson. He was the great grandson of George and Betsy Johnson, the founders of Johnsontown, Jefferson County, West Virginia. He was the fifth of eleven children. His nickname was “Eddie Boy.”

Edward was reared in an atmosphere of love, music, literature, and intellectual attainment. In his early teens, Edward accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized in New Hope Baptist Church, Newark, New Jersey. Edward graduated from Central High School in January of 1960, in Newark, New Jersey. He decided to attend college and went to Morehouse, a historically black male college in Atlanta, Georgia. There he was a member of the debate team and president of the sophomore class. He majored in education. After two years, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then had an epiphany and became a student at Crozer Theological Seminary, where he received an Associate Degree in Religious Studies. Edward returned to Newark, New Jersey and for many years he was employed as a security guard by Santoro. Edward moved to West Virginia on June 3, 2008. He was blessed with a sunny disposition and a magnetic smile.

He is survived by his sisters Viola G. Johnson, of Martinsburg, Beatrice E. East, of East Orange, New Jersey, Edith M. Gilmore, of Lanham, Maryland; brothers: Jerry M. Johnson, III, and wife Marie, of Charles Town, Arthur B. Johnson, of East Orange, New Jersey, James C Johnson, of New Rochelle, New York, and Levi R Johnson, of East Orange, New Jersey; uncle Marshall Williams, of Michigan, and a host of nieces, nephews, many cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Waldron and Carl Johnson and sister, Mary Thornton.

Funeral services will be held, 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the Jefferson Chapel with the Pastor Ed Hall officiating.

Interment will be in the Johnsontown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m.

Visitors are asked to wear mask, practice social distancing and follow directives.
