Obituary for John H. Barton

John H. Barton of Martinsburg, West Virginia went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 25, 2020 with his beloved wife at his bedside at their home. He was born on June 21, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Matthew and Merion Barton (deceased).

John is survived by his wife, Teena Barton (Martinsburg, WV). One son Maurice Barton (Philadelphia, PA). One daughter, Alexis Williams (Martinsburg, WV). Two stepdaughters, Jewell Boyd (Atlanta, GA) and Khyrstal Strozier (Silver Spring, MD). Four stepsons, Vincent Boyd (Atlanta, GA), Marcus Boyd (Martinsburg, WV), Lawrence Davis (Atlanta, GA) and Thomas Boyd (Atlanta, GA). Three grandchildren, Maurice Barton Jr., Xavier Barton, and Latonya Barton. Five step-grandchildren, Zaire Boyd, Omauri Boyd, Ny’Asia Boyd, Aaliyah Boyd, and Malachi Boyd. Two brothers, Matthew Thomas (Upper Darby, PA), Troy Barton and wife Shonda (Philadelphia, PA). Three sisters, Irene Niblack (Philadelphia, PA), Mary Ferrell and husband Milton (Lansdale, PA) and Sherry Murray and husband Richard (Philadelphia, PA).

John graduated class of 1967 from West Philadelphia High School. He served in the United States Army (1975-1977). Later he worked as a seasonal employee for the United States Postal Service.

John moved to Charles Town, WV where he was a member and minister of Judah Christian Community Church. He previously attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Martinsburg, WV. He then moved to Martinsburg, WV and joined the New Beginning Apostolic Church where he was a minister, teacher and a part of the adult and men’s choir as well as a member of the Brotherhood Ministry. He also served on the Usher board. Once he became ill and was not able to attend services in person. He continued to be a prayer minister at home. He also worked closely with Minister David Ross in Men of Valor. He also attended the Hope Institute for Theology Studies at Martinsburg Christian Center. He was a dedicated servant in ministry until the Lord called him home. All that knew him cherished his smile, his gentleness and most of all his Love for Jesus.

John was a man that was well-loved by his family and friends in the community. He had a wonderful spirit and tremendous love for Jesus and life. He loved family, church, and service to the community. John was a true soldier and will be forever in our hearts.

The Brown Funeral Home will be open for family to receive friends only from the hours of 3:00PM to 5:00PM on Friday, July 3, 2020.

Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

Graveside service will be held in Quantico National Cemetery at a later date.
